DRAGONS: The Italian Wyvern

A very voracious breed, the Italian Wyvern - or Roman Wyvern or even Etruscan Wyvern - can become a very dangerous opponent, especially if it is a female defending her offspring. Relatively large, this beast has scales of various shades, denominated as Common (Orange with black bursts); Etruscan (Dark purple with bluish tones), Lombard (Emerald Green) or the most rare and coveted by breeders, the Campanian (Brilliant Scarlet). Of predominantly nocturnal and crepuscular habits, this wyvern is a formidable predator of deer and wild boar, always catching their prey in midair, using its powerful hook-shaped claws also great to catch fish in the sea surface. Their long jaws and plates along the back let him look like a crocodile, while his waddle when walking on all fours much resembles a large lizard.
Known since the end of the Roman Republic, the Italian Wyvern was already an animal known as Julius Caesar, who greatly respected the dragons of all regions that passed, forbidding the Roman legions to attack any of them and even offer a small part of groceries in honor to these creatures so ancient. But it was at the end of the fourth century, in the empire of Theodosius I, that these beasts began to be hunted, because the newly converted Christians saw them as emissaries of evil and sin, especially for their skills with fire: In addition to firing a "liquid fire", like a gel, of their large mouths, can still, by releasing phosphorus in their scales by special glands, cover themselves in a flaming jacket, getting literally on fire. This technique is used primarily by males to defend territory from intruders, whether human or other dragons. Inhabitant of Mediterranean areas and Apennine forests, this dragon showed a strong temper, but gentle in captivity, being much in demand by riders by the stable flight. The fact that set fire to the body, however, makes it inadvisable to beginners.

Uma raça muito voraz, o Wyvern Italiano - ou Wyvern Romano ou ainda Wyvern Etrusco - pode se tornar um adversário muito perigoso, especialmente se for uma fêmea defendendo sua prole. Relativamente grande, esta fera tem escamas das mais variadas tonalidades, denominadas como Comum (Alaranjado com rajadas negras); Etrusco (Roxo escuro com tons azulados); Lombardo (Verde Esmeralda) ou ainda o mais raro e cobiçado por criadores, o Campano (Escarlate brilhante). De hábitos crepusculares e predominantemente noturnos, esse wyvern é um predador formidável de cervos e javalis, sempre pegando suas presas em pleno ar, usando suas poderosas garras em forma de anzol, também ótimas para pegar peixes na superfície do mar. Suas mandíbulas longas e placas ao longo das costas o deixam parecido com um crocodilo, enquanto seu gingado ao andar nas quatro patas o deixa muito semelhante a um grande lagarto.
Conhecido desde o fim da República Romana, o Wyvern Italiano já era um animal conhecido por Júlio César, que respeitava muito os dragões de todas regiões em que passava, proibindo as legiões romanas de atacarem qualquer uma delas e até mesmo oferecer uma pequena parte dos mantimentos em honra as essas criaturas tão antigas. Mas foi no fim do século IV, no império de Teodósio I, que estas feras começaram a ser caçadas, pois os recém-convertidos cristãos os viam como emissários do mal e do pecado, especialmente por suas habilidades com o fogo: Além de dispararem uma "fogo líquido", semelhante a um gel, de suas grandes bocas, ainda podem, ao liberar fósforo em suas escamas por glândulas especiais, se cobrir numa jaqueta flamejante, ficando literalmente em chamas. Tal técnica é usada principalmente pelos machos para defender o território de intrusos, sejam humanos ou outros dragões. Habitante de áreas mediterrâneas e florestas dos Apeninos, este dragão mostrou um temperamento forte, mas gentil no cativeiro, sendo muito requisitado por cavaleiros pelo voo estável. O fato de atear fogo ao corpo, porém, o torna pouco aconselhável aos iniciantes.
